How to choose the perfect brand photographer
Five questions to ask yourself when choosing the perfect brand photographer.
You have finally decided that now is the time to get some branding photography done. Maybe you’re ready to create a more dynamic presence online or maybe you’re ready to attract more ideal clients so that you can work less hours and make more money?!
Whatever the reason, you’re excited about having fresh content for all of your marketing platforms! Right? But how do you choose the right photographer when there are so many? Today we’re talking about a few questions that you will need to ask yourself when hiring a brand photographer for your business.
1. Does their image quality and style support my brand?
As a brand photographer myself, my website is my portfolio. It’s full of work that I’m proud to share and would like to create more of. Take a good look through their portfolio and see if their style is consistent and resonates with your brand.
Do you get the same vibe from their photos as you do from their messaging? These two things need to complement each other for consistent, and cohesive branding. And it gives a good indication of whether the photographer understands that aspect of marketing which will help them deliver the photos that you need for your business.
Pro Tip: See if you can find out how previous clients have been using their branding photos. Check out the photographer’s Instagram page and click on the tagged images icon to see how clients are using their photos.

2. Do our personalities mesh?
Check out the photographer’s about page. What’s their story? Why do they love what they do and how does this make them a good fit for you?
Make sure to book a consultation call before investing. Consultations are free and you’ll know within 5 minutes whether you feel a connection or not!
You’re trusting your photographer to bring out the best of you on the day of your shoot so making sure your personalities are a well suited is pretty important.
3. Do they specialize in brand photography?
Branding photography is so much more than being able to take a good photo. It’s about being able to communicate the personality of a brand through visual images. It’s important that they have experience with the type of work that you need to be done.
What kinds of projects have they published on their website? Do they have a background in marketing or branding or graphic design? Can you imagine your branding and yourself in their photos?
4. Are they committed to my success?
What is their onboarding process like? Are they providing opportunities and tools for you to help them understand your brand? Again a consultation with them will answer these questions.
Do they respond to you in a timely manner? This is a big one!
If a photographer is in the midst of a busy season or on holiday they will at the very least have an email autoresponder to let you know they are away from typical office hours and will give you an idea of when you should expect to hear back from them. If they aren’t very responsive in the beginning when you haven’t even paid them yet it doesn’t’ bode well that the rest of your experience will be any different.
Choosing a photographer who works with you through each step of the process from brand deep dive to wardrobe selection and effective communication will enhance your overall experience.

5. What kind of reviews do they have?
It’s always a good idea to check the photographer’s reviews and see what experiences others have had with them. Read ALL of their reviews from previous clients. Clients who are extremely satisfied with the services they LOVE will rave about them. This will give you a good idea of what to expect from your photographer’s work ethic, personality, and professionalism. You don’t want any surprises on the day of your shoot!
